Eyes on Cameraman with a Conscience

We need more people like Gilbertson to tell the real story. The truth about Iraq is out there.
clipped from www.theage.com.au

Ashley Gilbertson returned from Iraq with the prestigious Robert Capa Award for courageous photography, and considerable emotional scars. Montage: Simon O'Dwyer

ASHLEY GILBERTSON got out of Iraq but he can’t get the place out
of his head. The Melbourne-born photojournalist has dodged bullets,
mortars and white phosphorous in his eight visits to the country
over the past six years. He has watched his subjects die and been
spattered with their blood. But the 30-year-old says he is looking
forward to returning to Iraq in June.

Spider Chrysanthemum

Fair gift of Friendship! and her ever bright
And faultless image! welcome now thou art,
In thy pure loveliness–thy robes of white,
Speaking a moral to the feeling heart;
Unscattered by heats–by wintry blasts unmoved–
Thy strength thus tested–and thy charms improved.
- Anna Peyre Dinnies,
To a White Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums from gilded argosy
Unload their gaudy senseless merchandise.
- Oscar Wilde (Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde),
Humanitad (st. 11)
